Hi, my name is Peter. I am now 64 and I first visited Canvey in 1852, bedfore the floods. We used to stay in a bungalow in Vaagan Road called Howlands, owned by my dad's aunt, it's no longwer there, replaced by two modern houses, does anybody remember it?

I came down two years ago after a long absence and I was devaststed to see they had demolished the Casino, where when I was a lad I used to help out at the Rifle Stand where the rifles had ballbearings for ammo! Happy days!

I used to come down regularly in the 'sixties to see a young lady who lived in the Monico when it was a Charrington's Public House, her name was Tina Jones, anybody know where she is now?

Cheers

Peter

Think I'm the youngest person on this site lol. I was born in 73 and lived there till 1990 when I moved to Canada. I went to Lubbins park and Furtherwick park schools. Would like to to shout out to Mr Copping and Miss Gould of Lubbins and Eunice Bumpus, Ken Warburton of Furtherwick as being great influences in my life and thank them for their patience and pushing me to my limits. Would love to thank you all in person one day.

I love your site, some of it brings back a lot of memories. A lot is hard to take... so much is gone :( I can't believe the carnival is done :( we used to live a at the bottom of Furtherwick road (middle of the second block of 3 from the end). The carnival would be half a block out of the parking lot and the zulus would be in an all-out water fight with the firemen. They would come running into the houses with buckets for more water and run back out again. I used to work at the fairground each year too... Does that still come by?

I posted in the concrete barge forum already too so I am done with posting for the night. Too many memories coming back and it sorta gets you inside to know that nobody else is going to experience those things again... ever :(

Hi all, a big thankyou for all the hard work done by Dave and others for all the stuff on this site.
I am a relative newcomer, only been here since 1986, but have seen a lot of changes since then. I feel the love that people had for the Island in the post war years whenever I read their posts, it must have been great to have lived here then!
I lived in Basildon from 1957 until I came to Canvey in 1986, Basildon was great then though!
I am very interested in the history of Canvey and look forward to reading all the things on the site.

Hi there I am Lucas G i spent most of my childhood summer holidays at canvey Island, you know I am sure there are loads of ex islanders who don't know about this site. I was wondering if you have thought about advertising, you know the sections in national newspapers where you can put if your looking for somebody or if you just want a grumble. This is a good site and it should keep on going

Hi: My name is Richard Kovelant. My wife and I live in Annapolis, Maryland USA. We recently purchased an album of photographs of Canvy Island at an Antique Show in Baltimore, Maryland. They are from 1895. We are eager to learn about the Island and share the photos with you. We restored the same and will make them available free of charge. Please contact us. This is most interesting

Hello every one from Canvey....
Although I wasn't born , nor did I live there but my mothers brother and his wife and their son lived there for many years, My aunt Evelyn , as far as I know still lives there, as does her son and his wife.
Their Sir name is Boniface.
It was lovely looking at all the old photo's of the 1953 floods, and the "then and now" pics. it impressed me to see all the faces smiling in such a tragedy,
I was looking for a pic of my uncle Albert with his dog smoky oh his back, (Piggy back style).
but I couldn't find it, I do know thatit was in the local news paper.
Looking forward to visiting your site again
Ev

Hello, what a great site,my name is David jackson, I lived on canvey from the day I was born in 1966 until around 1990, I grew up in denham road, from wich I have great memories of playing at lakeside and the gunny as a kid, I later moved to lottem road, I was always interested in the islands history and me and my friends would go exploring the old coastal gun emplacements on the sea wall etc, I have some fantastic memories of growing up on canvey and it will always have a special place in my heart.

Keep up the good work

Hi there

I was born on Canvey and was here during the 1953 floods. My family have lived here for many years.
I went to Leigh Beck Infant and Junior School and then onto Furtherwick Secondary Modern.
I am currently the Secretary for the Canvey Community Archive which is going to be a great way for Canvey people to have their personal memories of the Island logged for posterity. I run our local Book Club at Canvey Library on the last Thursday of the month and everyone is welcome so please come along and have a chat with likeminded people. We're not stuffy and bookish we just enjoy a chat about the last book we read and often go off on tangent about life and what it has to chuck at you.
On Friday 28th September I held a Macmillan Coffee morning and raised £1300 and I feel very humbled at everyone's generosity and would like to say a big thank you to everyone involved on the day.

Hi Ev.
I remember your uncle Albert but I think I knew his wife better. Was she a Collins before she married?
