Hi! Spotted you by fluke and fancied registering, I lived on Canvey for years and remember Mike@Selectronic's and wondered who else I might know! I'm living in South Wales and haven't been back much since 1999 but have fond memories of the Island, keep up the good work and look forward to seeing more of your site.

Hello! Glad to see this forum up and running. I was born on Canvey, lived at Hooton's store and petrol station - both long gone -was there during the '53 Flood and moved off the Island in the mid 1960's. I now live just about as far as you can get from the sea in Oxfordshire but still love to hear about Canvey.

My name is Caroline Monk and I was born on the Island in 1968. I moved away in 1977. The best years of my life were spent there and my Grandparents still live there so I go back a lot. Love the place

Thanks for inviting me as a member of the Canvey Forum; I have waited so long for Geoff’s discussion board to come back on line I was getting withdrawal symptoms.
Lets hope this one is as successful as Geoff’s, it’s a shame that the old one could not be resurrected as there were so many Canvey people’s memories on it so it does mean resubmitting all of our memories to this board
But, if most of the old members join here they will already have read them, still lets see how it goes eh.
I moved to Canvey after the war in 1948 and lived there until I emigrated to Australia in 1970
Will start posting some memories soon

Welcome Peanuts; nice to see another old name here! Yes it's such a shame we seem to have lost all the stories & memories Geoff had on his forum - I don't know if he even has a record of any of it. Feel free to repeat any of the stories here - this site is regually backed up so they will be saved for prosperity. Lucky you living in Sydney - I love it there and hope to visit again one year.

Hi, I'm new to 'forums' but I liked the look of this one so I thought I'd have a go at joining up! Have done a bit of research on Canvey History and have 'dug the shifting sands of Canvey Point' for archeology with a coloegue who also writes for this forum. Have read Robert Hallmann's new book on Canvey and can thoroughly recommend it to anyone with even a passing interest in the Island!

Hello all.
I don't live on Canvey, but I stumbled on the site while I was browsing concrete barge stuff.
I did use to live in Rainham though and also used to walk down to the barges on occassion.

Don't know if this info will be of any use to anyone, but, about 30 years ago, several of the Rainham barges had private property warnings on them and I can remember a sign that said they were the property of 'The Layer Shipping Company', no less.

One of them, toward the western end of the group, also had a bit of wooden superstructure (AKA a shed) on it, which I think someone used, off and on. I can also remember there being a chap (in his 50s or 60s then) that used to turn up in a Land Rover and go onto the Shack Barge.

hi my name is malcolm burns ,i lived on canvey back in the sixtys. I went to canvey secondery school I left in 1966. I spent alot of time down the beach or in the casino arcades and of course in The monico,. I left in 1969 and now live in New zealand with my wife diane . We have 2 sons, and 3 grandchilderen, kate 18, marcus 10, ashley 7. It sounds like canvey Island has changed quite abit since Iwas there as ateenager.such along time ago., but fond memories.... mal..

Hello All.

I'm Kevin O'Brien. I used to live on the Island until 1970/71 I lived at 17 Laars Ave then moved round the corner to 33 Rainbow Rd until my father died (Arthur O'Brien) and mum sold the house because she couldn't live there anymore.

We moved to Somerset in 71 and I spent 29 years there until I moved up here to Fife Scotland in 2000

Lots of people knew my Mum & dad and also my Grandfather Charlie Bennett who used to sing down the corner club a lot and was a keen pigeon flyer.

I have really fond memories of living on the Island with of all my friends some of who I still see regularly. If anyone knew me or my family I would be very interested to hear from you.

I'm Jackie Fisher - that was. I lived on Canvey from '52 until '72 when I emigrated to New Zealand. I went to Long Road Primary & Canvey Secondary School - that was. I was also a member of Girls Brigade 2nd Canvey.

I found this sight looking to see if it had been affected by the floods you are experiencing in the UK at present.

If anyone remembers me please contact as I am feeling a little homesick at present.
